Introducing the LineVision V3 System

The LineVision V3 platform is a non-contact, transmission line monitoring system that uses optical and electromagnetic field sensors to monitor conductor position and motion and measure power flow without contact or close proximity to energized conductors.

 The sensors and associated electronics can be mounted directly on an existing transmission structure/tower, or installed on a standalone ground-based pole or pad mount. With either installation type, no physical or electrical contact with energized conductors is required, allowing rapid installation without line outages, live-line helicopter or hot-stick operations. The equipment is installed well outside of minimum safe working clearances from energized conductors. It provides clients with options for secure EMS and/or web-based data feeds for real-time delivery and historical data analysis. The system is provided as a turnkey solution including installation, warranty and data delivery.

Why do we care about transmission line data?

Continuous monitoring of overhead conductors provides our clients with unique real-time and historical access to field measurement data not traditionally available to transmission engineers, operators, and planners. These rich and site-specific data sets can be used as inputs to operational and planning models that previously had to rely on base-case or worst-case assumptions. By incorporating monitoring data into transmission system planning, design, operation, and life-cycle analysis processes, transmission owners can increase system utilization during normal operations. They can also observe with unprecedented accuracy and detail the performance of their conductors in extreme weather or post-contingency events, ultimately increasing system reliability and safety.

How does this system work?

The LineVision V3 system precisely measures the position of an overhead conductor with a patent-pending optical sensor method, and determines the power flow on the line with a patented electromagnetic field (EMF) sensor. Since the conductor’s sag, tension, and temperature are interrelated quantities, measurements of sag or tension can be used to determine the conductor temperature.

Dynamic Line Ratings are then calculated by considering the present conductor temperature, line current loading (as in, amperes), ambient temperature, and solar heating effects to infer (analytically) the convective cooling potential of the present wind conditions. When effective wind speeds are moderate or high, conductors stay cool even under heavy current loading. Dynamic Line Ratings simply quantify the amount of additional current loading that the line could handle before approaching maximum conductor temperature or minimum clearance limits.

Most importantly…what are the benefits for Transmission Line Operators?

Because transmission line current capacities are traditionally limited by static ratings based on “worst-case” weather assumptions, Dynamic Line Ratings expose additional current-carrying capacity to operators the vast majority of the time. This additional capacity can provide economic and operational benefits, including:

  • The potential to reduce, transfer, or eliminate congestion
  • Flexibility when managing outages and construction timelines
  • Additional flexibility in post-contingency operations
  • Integration of renewables, especially congestion-constrained wind resources

Line monitoring also provides critical data for managing transmission reliability. The real-time data provided by the line monitoring system helps operators avoid annealing conductors or violating ground clearance limits by providing timely alerts when temperature or sag thresholds are reached. Analysis of historical patterns of conductor temperatures and sags can be integrated into engineering models used to inform decisions about maintenance, rating assessment, reconductoring or replacement of transmission assets. 

What makes LineVision V3 different?

Previous versions of LineVision monitoring systems relied on arrays of electromagnetic field (EMF) sensors placed at strategic locations along the monitored transmission span, including several sensors placed at ground level near midspan within the right-of-way.

With this approach comes potential logistical challenges regarding placement of monitors on private easements, in agricultural fields, or in populated areas where tampering is a concern.

In addition, the previous EMF sensor array approach required a minimum line current of around 30 amperes in order to be able to detect conductor position, resulting in gaps in conductor monitoring data during outages or low-loading periods. 

The V3 system incorporates an optical sensor mounted on or near the transmission structure, making installation a more straightforward proposition for the client utility. The optical sensor handles the conductor geometry portion of the line monitoring system, and eliminates the need for EMF sensors in the right-of-way at midspan. An EMF sensor is incorporated into the electronics system, and is able to detect and measure line currents and power flows without requiring contact with the energized conductors. 

The optical sensor is able to measure conductor geometry in a wide range of conditions and at all line loading levels. The direct observation of conductor geometry enables accurate detection of anomalies like icing and galloping.

An outstanding aspect of the V3 is the simple installation process. Since it is a non-contact solution, the installation doesn’t require scheduled line outages, hot sticks, helicopters, or utility crews, which lowers the overall cost of installation and ownership. The V3 system can be installed by mounting the sensors and electronics enclosure onto any type of transmission line structure, or on a ground-level post or pad mount in a variety of convenient configurations.
